Great Gifts: Books for Children

If there's anyone who knows what books to get for kids, Guest Blogger Lynne Favreau does!  Check out her post to find something good to give this year!

I'm a former nanny, and infant/toddler teacher, mother to two girls,  roles that instilled in me the importance of books. The infinite variety of themes, subjects, styles and levels means every child can should be able to find themselves, new world, and interests to keep them coming back for more.

As I was going through my list of books I noticed some favorite this year lent themselves to pairing with gifts, so if you are looking for more than a book, I've included these bonus suggestions when appropriate.
Ages 4-8 /Preschool-3rd grade

"...when a little girl's parents announce that it's time for the family to simplify, downsizing from a huge home in the city to a tiny house in the woods, it's quite a blow--after all, she's grown quite fond of her pet poodles, cats, tarantula, snake, hedgehogs, mice, birds, fish, octopus, rabbits, pony, pig, and turtles. Fortunately, she finds them all good homes, and she has to admit that she enjoys her new simpler life.
There's just one thing: She still really wants just one pet."

A full-spread introduction to each state/territory features background about its culinary culture, brought to life with illustrated food facts and maps. Informative and delicious for kids and their families!"

You will learn what light is made of and how it fits alongside everything else in the world. Walter introduces readers into the mystery behind incandescence, light waves, the color spectrum, and iridescence as well as how we perceive light in our world and beyond."

Bonus Suggestion
Optic Triangle Prism

"Every year, a boy and his family go camping at Mountain Pond.

Usually, they see things like an eagle fishing for his dinner, a salamander with red spots on its back, and chipmunks that come to steal food while the family sits by the campfire.

But this year is different. This year, the boy is going into first grade, and his mother is encouraging him to do things on his own, just like his older brother. And the most different thing of all . . . this year, a tiger comes to the woods."

The Snail and The Whale
Ages 2-5

"One little snail longs to see the world and hitches a lift on the tail of an enormous whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, past icebergs and volcanoes, sharks and penguins, and the little snail feels so small in the vastness of the world. But when disaster strikes and the whale is beached in a bay, it's the tiny snail's big plan that saves the day!"
