Give this Book! Prince: The Beautiful One

Prince had been writing his memoirs just a few months before his tragic and untimely death at the age of 57 in 2016. He was a stone genius, bona fide composer and multi-instrumentalist, entertainer, surprising prankster and more:  there was something otherworldly about him and how he lived.

Because he had begun the effort just a few months before his death, the book contains about 20 pages of his own words, but they also reproduce his hand written notes, which are priceless to see and have. In addition, there are substantial supplemental notes from conversations Prince had with Dan Piepenbring, a late 20 something Paris Review editor who Prince had chosen as a co-writer.  but in those pages there is quite a bit of information about his earliest days growing up, his first (failed) performance, the influence of his parents and some of his thinking on musical Alphas like himself ie: Beyonce and Michael Jackson.

The 280 page tome is filled with more items never before seen: Notes on the Purple Rain screenplay (which has quite a bit of a young Prince writing out the effects of his folks issues and relationship on him),  photos, lyrics and a scrapbook Prince made while doing his first album. The book begins with a section by Piepenbring about how the project began: being contacted by Prince, nervously meeting him (who wouldn't be!) and the fascinating details of what Prince envisioned. It's interesting, as it gives more insight into Prince and his objective to inspire all people to create - their day and their life.

I encourage getting this from your local brick and mortar book store since the gold shiny paper cover easily creases or shows marks so gingerly lift the pile to find a good one, It also keeps them in business, even if you have to order it or it costs a little more.

If you must shop online, it's available at Barnes and Noble (if you're a member, use your discount and their coupons), Amazon and Target (call before you go to Target, to be sure it's in stock since it's not a dedicated book store), among others.

TIP: If you can, get a first edition, do. This one should be valuable someday. Just look inside on the back side of the title page to see the words 'First Edition'.
