Stocking Stuffers 2019 Part 1

I LOVE Stocking Stuffers --and they're da bomb once you're a grown up! Especially if you choose thoughtfully. While most of us don't want more stuff, a well done sock can knock theirs off! Worry not, I provide several Stocking Stuffer posts each year for all tastes and price points! Let's get started!

My mother always saved wrapping scraps and stayed up till the wee hours listening to the Jackie Gleason Orchestra's Christmas album while wrapping EACH and every little thing.  Each sock always had a favorite candy, something toy-like for grown ups like silly putty, a slinky or a yo yo, some practical office stuff like a great pen, post it notes, stamps (and back then, white out) and for my dad - cigarettes!

These are great! Rival and Revel golf ball ice cubes whether they drink bubbly seltzer, whiskey or gin and tonic! Only $12.50 on AMAZON for a six cube silicone maker.

This pen is simply fabulous. Writes so smooth it's like a fountain pen. Anyone who borrows it stops and says, wow, this writes great. Hard to find but you can get them on Amazon, $18 for six, or buy ONE for $2.75 on JetPENS.  Comes in Black, Blue and Red.  IMPORTANT TIP:  These are .07 mediums, which I think write best. Be sure you're not getting .05 fine point... unless you want that.

Artisana Organics makes organic, non-GMO nut butters: Pecan with Cashew ($10) , Walnut with cashew ($11) and Coconut Cacao ($7) they are DIVINE! Usually $18 at a health food store, if you order through Thrive Market (a great online market) you save so much! Here's the link to all their products.

Fun to give something a little different, these square 100% beeswax tapers in natural color, that come in a lovely box to boot. They smell heavenly, and burn longer than paraffin candles with no toxins. The company claims burning them is said to increase restorative ions in the air. All for only $14!  From Famicoop on Amazon.

The best, easiest liner to apply, L'Oreal Paris now makes their signature felt tip in a far less expensive version. And there is a gray and a brown for days you want to enhance your lash line without looking dramatic. Infallible Super Slim Liquid Eye Liner May be found at drug stores these days but if not, click to order HERE, for $8.95.

Mr Beams Motion activated lights, 30 lumens covering 50 sq. ft, for anywhere in the yard, lining your doorways, footpaths, fence or driveway.  $16.91 on AMAZON for a 2 pack.  Stick them in the ground or mount them on balcony fencing, stair banisters or the wall.

Ye Olde wooden folding ruler. This is what they used before the metal retractible, as attractive and functional today as they were 100 years ago. Traditionally called Blindman's Rules because of the large and easy to read markings.  Highly recommended as one of the most classic tools any woodworker can add to his toolbox. The 36" length folds down to a 9" long section. Easily slips into a pants pocket. At time of publication, ON sale for $20 (from $38) from Garrett Wade.

Magazine or newspaper subscription:  Yes, we want to reduce our carbon footprint, and we'd need to recycle it, but we also are hearing about the dangers of too much screen time (or frankly, are just getting tired of this new way of life). Whether or not you value a return to the way it 'used to be' to hold something in your hand, it also helps the journalists keep their jobs and the magazines and papers stay in business. So it's a doubly good deed.

A trip to Barnes and Noble to find something practical or exotic for your person's interest - from decorating, art, cooking and woodworking to adventuring and fitness to fashion, politics, writing, music and gossip,  there are tons out there to choose from!

Buy one issue, roll it up with a ribbon or wrap it, and it's a perfect fit in the neck of any stocking! Put a note saying it's theirs all year and you have something thinking of you each month as it arrives. That's a LOT of bang for the buck!

It can be good to get a limited subscription - say 3-6 mo - if you have any doubts that they'd like it - and they can extend it themselves. Find some deals through services like Magazine Deals, or go straight to the source. Cooks Illustrated is one I highly recommend!

TIP: Many magazine subscriptions come with digital access too - so you give the best of both worlds!
