Great Easter Idea -- And You Don't Need to Live In Texas

To quote one of the followers of this blog: this is the perfect gift for Easter because it's 100% sugar free but you still get that extra sweet feeling of helping to save an amazing native Texas bird.

While it makes a great Easter gift, why not give it for any Spring birthdays, anniversaries, or baby showers too?

For the first time ever, the Houston Zoo is giving you the opportunity to name an endangered Attwater's prairie chicken, currently being raised from egg to fuzzy chick at the Zoo!
A century ago, a million of these birds roamed free in their native coastal plains habitat, including grasslands that now make up the Houston metropolitan area. But, due to a number of factors, including habitat loss and predation, only about 100 of these birds are left in the wild at a few protected sites in Southeast Texas.

Attwater's prairie chicken is perhaps best know for its "booming" display, an elaborate behavior performed by the males during breeding season to attract females, where they inflate the orange air sacks on their necks and emit a deep "booming" sound while dancing around stomping their feet. Some of the traditional dances of the North American Plains Indians, notably those of the Lakota, are based on this display.
Each spring, as part of a national recovery plan for this native Texas species, the Houston Zoo raises a new group of these birds to be released back into the wild in hopes of growing the wild population large enough to sustain itself without human intervention.
With your generous donation of $100 to this Attwater's Prairie Chicken Recovery Program, you will not only help the Zoo continue its efforts to bring this amazing bird back from the brink of extinction, but you will also be among the first to have the privilege of naming one of the Zoo's resident chicks!

Please note: chicks are available for naming in limited quantities between March and May, so don't delay! After you make your gift, you will receive an e-mail confirmation and tax receipt with a link to download a printable gift certificate and some fun Attwater's prairie chicken activities. The Zoo will also send out e-mail updates when the chicks have hatched and when they're released!

DONATE NOW!!!
And give that named chick certificate to someone really special to make their DAY!

Cookie Cutter Heaven

A reader of this blog went on a drive through Fleetwood, PA and stumbled upon a store touting thousands of cookie cutters, called H.O. Foose Tinsmithing Company. To offer that many, there would have to be some pretty unique ones. For those who can't make a trip there, worry not! You can order online by clicking HERE.

You can find every kind of holiday cutter, animals, even dinosaurs, and a whole lot more, like this peace sign for $2.95:

Or this Awareness Ribbon complete with the teardrop center. You can frost it to be the color of the cause you are supporting. It's $3.95.

This kite, which is fun, for $2.95 - bet making a dough that's firm enough to keep that skinny tail on is a challenge:

Speaking of dough, they do give recipes on their site as well. Including ones for doggie treats. Be sure to check it out.
